Basement Jaxx, Take me back

Dougal Wilson has directed the promo for the new Basement Jaxx track, ‘Take Me Back to Your House.’ Production Company was Colonel Blimp, with visual effects and innovative telecine grade, shortlisted for best telecine at the CADS, undertaken by MPC.

The promo has a distinctly Soviet feel showing Cossack dancers, the hammer and sickle flag, Russian bears and brightly dressed formation stage dancers.

Dougal shot a miniature model of the tree strewn landscape which was later extended at MPC, trees were replicated to fill the background and the snow on the building’s roof were added in Flame. The opening shot used a camera that swoops through the sky which was needed extensive 3D tracking in Flame to match the original physical camera move. The military tank element was shot live action using a real T34 Russian tank, with the forest background composited into the shots at a later date. Moving to the interior shots, the dancers ‘kicking back’ in the Cossack bar were shot live action, whereas the stage based formation dancers were shot on different plates before being combined into one. The bears seen behind them were replicated in flame. Look carefully and you will see the faces of the Basement Jaxx boys superimposed onto pictures on the walls.

MPC Colourist Mark Horrobin explained; ‘We wanted to create two very different environments to illustrate the opposition between the dark photo style look of the Cossack bar and its poor impoverished clientele and the bright, striking theatre stage with it’s rich red, gold and turquoise Vaudevillian curtain and costume elements.’

The promo airs on Thursday 17th August 2006.
